  3. <hi style=afpcap>The Boeing Airplane Company has been synonymous with bomber aircraft for more than 60 years, with the B-9 being the first in a long line of designs. The B-9 began life as a private venture with work beginning in 1930. The prototype was evaluated by the Army at Wright Field in June 1931 and was well received for its new revolutionary features, principally its all-metal construction. Despite this success, the AAC only ordered a total of seven aircraft including the two prototypes, as the Army preferred the Martin B-10.</hi>
